Afridi champions return of big matches to Peshawar

Cricket icon Shahid Afridi believes Peshawar is ready to host Pakistan Super League (PSL) and international fixtures — and he wants the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to act.

According to a report by tribune.com.pk, Afridi made the remarks during a visit to the Peshawar Police Lines, where he laid a wreath at the Martyrs’ Memorial and paid tribute to fallen heroes.

Speaking to the media, he said: “The stadium facilities are of high standard, and I request the PCB chairman to ensure that PSL and international matches are brought to Peshawar.”

His comments come as cricket authorities continue to explore new venues to expand the PSL footprint and reintroduce international cricket to more cities across Pakistan.

Security, infrastructure, and fan support in focus

Afridi’s support for Peshawar as a PSL host city is rooted in more than just sentiment — he highlighted both the strong crowd turnout at a recent charity match and the high-quality security arrangements that supported it.

The match, held at Imran Khan Cricket Stadium, drew a large crowd and showcased the city’s readiness to stage major events. Afridi praised the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa police for their professionalism and commitment to public safety, which he described as a cornerstone of any successful international event.

“The police have always stood at the front line to protect people’s lives and property, and the entire nation is proud of their sacrifices.”

His remarks were welcomed by Peshawar’s police leadership. CCPO Dr. Mian Saeed and SSP Operations Masood Ahmed assured the former captain that the city would provide “foolproof” security for any national or international cricket events in the future.

A message of unity and regional pride

Beyond cricket, Afridi used the visit to express his deep connection with the people of Peshawar and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. From praising the sacrifices of the police force to reiterating his bond with the Pashtun community, Afridi’s message was clear — he sees himself as one with the region.

“I will always stand by my resilient people in times of need,” Afridi added.

He also thanked the Peshawar police and district administration on behalf of both himself and PSL franchise Peshawar Zalmi, calling the force “professional and exemplary.”

Industry implications: Peshawar’s PSL potential

Afridi’s comments lend significant weight to the ongoing push for greater venue diversification within the PSL. His endorsement, paired with recent improvements in local infrastructure and security, could accelerate the PCB’s decision-making around hosting matches in Peshawar — a market that has long been seen as cricket-mad but underutilized.

As PSL franchises and league organizers prepare for future editions, Afridi’s call for action may prove to be a turning point for one of Pakistan’s most passionate sporting cities.
