Smriti Mandhana returns to practice as personal chapter closes
One of Indian cricket’s most admired figures, Smriti Mandhana, returned to her batting practice on Monday, barely 24 hours after confirming the end of her engagement to music composer Palash Muchhal. The development ended weeks of speculation following a sudden postponement of their wedding, which had originally been scheduled for November 24 in her hometown of Sangli.
The news was confirmed by Mandhana in a detailed post shared via her Instagram Story, where she addressed the swirling rumours surrounding her personal life.
“Over the past few weeks there has been plenty of speculation around my life and I feel it is important for me to speak out at this time,” she wrote in the note that quickly circulated across social media.
Without going into further personal detail, she confirmed the wedding had been called off. “I am a very private person and I would like to keep it that way, but I need to clarify that the wedding is called off.”
Mandhana also used the platform to request sensitivity from the public and media, asking for space to allow both families to move forward with dignity. “I request you to please respect the privacy of both families at this time and allow us the space to process and move on at our own pace.”
Nation first: Mandhana shifts focus back to cricket
Despite the emotional setback, Mandhana emphasized her focus remains firmly on her cricketing journey. With India set to host a five-match T20I series against Sri Lanka starting December 21, the left-handed opener resumed training, demonstrating her resilience in the face of personal turmoil.
“I believe there is a higher purpose driving us all and for me that has always been representing my country at the highest level. I hope to continue to play and win trophies for India for as long as possible and that is where my focus will forever be,” she wrote, in what many fans hailed as a dignified statement of intent.
She concluded her message with a note of gratitude and a quiet resolve to turn the page. “Thank you for all your support. It’s time to move forward.”
Palash Muchhal responds: “I have decided to move on”
Shortly after Mandhana’s statement, Palash Muchhal also issued his own via Instagram, confirming the end of the relationship and offering his perspective on the weeks leading up to the announcement.
“I have decided to move on in my life and step back from my personal relationship,” he wrote.
Addressing the wave of online speculation and gossip that had followed the postponed wedding, Muchhal expressed his anguish: “It has been very difficult for me to see people react so easily to baseless rumours about something which has been most sacred to me.”
He went on to reflect on the emotional toll of public scrutiny and called for a more compassionate approach from society.
“It’s the most difficult phase of my life, and I will deal with it gracefully, holding on to my beliefs. I truly hope we, as a society, learn to pause before judging someone based on unverified gossip, whose sources are never identified. Our words can wound in ways we may never understand.”
Warning against false narratives and a call for accountability
Muchhal’s post also included a clear warning regarding the spread of misinformation. As rumours about both families circulated widely in recent weeks, he noted that legal steps would be taken against those crossing the line.
“While we think about these things, many people in the world are facing drastic consequences. My team will be taking strict legal action against those spreading false and defamatory content,” he wrote.
Despite the difficult circumstances, Muchhal ended his message on a note of appreciation:
“Thank you to everyone who has stood by me with kindness in this tough time.”
Palak Muchhal: “We would like to spread positivity”
Singer Palak Muchhal, sister of Palash, also spoke out about the situation during a brief interaction with Filmfare, urging for strength and positivity.
“I think the families have been through a very tough time. Like you just said, I would just want to repeat that we would like to believe in positivity at this time. We would like to spread positivity as much as we can. We are also trying to stay strong.”
A private matter, made public
While the reasons behind the cancelled wedding remain private, the sequence of events leading up to it included several unforeseen setbacks. On the day of the ceremony, Smriti Mandhana’s father was reportedly hospitalized with a serious health concern. Around the same time, Palash Muchhal also experienced health issues and was admitted to a private hospital in Mumbai. Though both later recovered, the wedding was indefinitely postponed — until the couple jointly decided to call it off entirely.
In the wake of the media glare and public commentary, both Mandhana and Muchhal have chosen to speak directly to their followers — not to explain, but to seek peace and space. Their statements reflect a shared commitment to close this chapter respectfully, with dignity and without further speculation.
