Ahead of the much-anticipated Test between England and India at Headingley in Leeds, fans gathered early outside the stadium were treated to an unexpected sight: England head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes arriving on foot, separate from the team bus.
The unusual moment unfolded about an hour before the start of play, as the crowd of supporters and vendors selling flags, jerseys, and caps began to swell. A cheer went up when McCullum was spotted walking toward the stadium gate alongside two members of his support staff. Approximately ten to twelve minutes later, Stokes followed suit, also arriving on foot.
According to a stadium security official as quoted by Moneycontrol, “They’re coming on their cars. They parked at the parking lot and walked around the stadium.”
Echoes of a previous low-key arrival
The sight of top England figures arriving independently called to mind a similar moment from earlier in the series. In the third ODI against the West Indies at the Oval, several England players had opted for Lime bikes to reach the ground when their team bus got caught in city traffic.
This time, there were no such delays reported in Leeds. McCullum and Stokes simply chose to forgo the bus, arriving around 20 minutes before the rest of the squad.
India arrives later than expected
The Indian team bus pulled in approximately 20 minutes after the England team’s main arrival, with security staff noting the group was a few minutes behind schedule. By that point, the crowd outside had significantly built up, potentially contributing to the minor delay.
A symbolic move or just convenience?
Whether a deliberate gesture or a practical choice, the independent arrival of England’s leadership duo added a relaxed, confident tone to the start of the Headingley Test. With England winning the toss and opting to bowl first, the buzz outside the ground mirrored the intensity and anticipation surrounding this marquee matchup.
