A major boost for Bengaluru’s IPL calendar has arrived with the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium officially cleared to host matches again. The development marks a significant moment for the venue, which had been under scrutiny following safety concerns in recent months. KSCA confirmed the approval through a media release, outlining that government authorities had signed off on hosting IPL 2026 fixtures after a detailed review process.
Government approval follows expert committee review
The decision came after a high-level meeting involving state authorities, KSCA officials, franchise representatives and an expert panel tasked with evaluating the venue’s preparedness.
“We are pleased to inform that a meeting was held earlier today at Vidhana Soudha under the chairmanship of the Home Minister of Karnataka, G. Parameshwara, with the Expert Committee and representatives of KSCA, RCB and DNA,” KSCA said in a media release.
The association further confirmed that the approval was granted after a thorough assessment of compliance measures and infrastructure upgrades carried out at the stadium.
“During the meeting, the Expert Committee presented its report outlining the preparedness and compliance measures undertaken at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Based on the recommendations of the Expert Committee and after reviewing the arrangements in detail, the Home Minister has formally accorded approval for the conduct of the upcoming IPL matches at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.”
With the clearance now in place, the stadium is expected to host Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s home fixtures, including key knockout matches later in the season.
Safety upgrades and infrastructure changes drive clearance
The approval hinges on a series of structural and operational improvements completed under Phase 1, with multiple departments contributing to the process. KSCA official spokesperson Vinay Mruthyunjaya also indicated that the clearance followed a comprehensive evaluation of safety upgrades and infrastructure readiness at the venue, confirming the development to Sports NDTV.
“As committed by the KSCA, all the Phase 1 works have been completed to the satisfaction of the Expert Committee. They conducted a personal inspection across the stadium to verify the work done,” Vinay Mruthyunjaya told Sports NDTV.
He added that compliance with safety recommendations was a central requirement in securing permission. “All the measures recommended by the Expert Committee under Phase 1 have been fully implemented,” he noted.
The government has also laid down strict conditions for match operations, particularly around safety protocols and crowd management. “The government has also asked us to ensure that all safety guidelines and standard operating procedures are strictly followed,” he said.
Full-capacity return and operational readiness
With the upgrades in place, the venue has been deemed fit to operate at maximum capacity, marking a full-scale return for IPL crowds in Bengaluru.
“The full capacity of the stadium is about 33,000 spectators. The authorities have given us permission to host matches at full capacity since all the safety measures have been completed,” KSCA Vice President Sujit Somasundar told Sports NDTV.
Beyond infrastructure, the focus has also shifted toward spectator awareness and matchday preparedness. He highlighted that fan education would play a key role in ensuring smooth operations.
“They were also of the opinion that we should have a strong social media campaign where we will inform the public about all the safety measures. We will educate spectators on how to attend a match of this magnitude, including information on exit points and other arrangements such as ambulance services and additional safety measures that have been incorporated,” he explained.
Reflecting on the discussions that led to the approval, KSCA Vice President Sujit Somasundar said while speaking to reporters, “We had a very good meeting with the Home Minister G Parmeshwara. We are very thankful to him and also to Sreemant Singh sir and his team, all pf them got together and helped us and supported us in making the Chinnaswamy Stadium ready to hold international matches of the magnitude of IPL or any other international matches”.
The stadium is now set to be handed over to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in line with existing agreements, with KSCA continuing to play a role in maintaining compliance standards. “We will hand over the stadium to RCB as per the stadium agreement and assist them in ensuring that all safety standards are maintained,” Mruthyunjaya added.
Coordinated effort behind approval
KSCA credited a wide network of stakeholders for enabling the return of IPL matches to the venue, highlighting coordination between government authorities, law enforcement and cricket administrators.
“The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) places on record its sincere gratitude to the Home Minister, G. Parameshwar, for his leadership, guidance and support in facilitating this approval. KSCA also conveys its special appreciation to G. M. Maheshwar Rao, Chairman of the Expert Committee, for his leadership and oversight in reviewing the preparedness and infrastructure arrangements,” the association stated.
It also acknowledged the role of senior officials and enforcement agencies in ensuring compliance. “Our special thanks are also due to Sreemant Kumar Singh, Member Secretary of the Expert Committee and Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru, for his proactive coordination and for ensuring that all safety, security and operational aspects were comprehensively evaluated,” the release added.
It further stated, “KSCA further expresses its sincere appreciation to all the distinguished members of the Expert Committee and the officials associated with the Expert Committee and its sub-committees, whose careful assessment and constructive recommendations have been instrumental in enabling this important decision.”
The broader effort, KSCA noted, extended across multiple departments and leadership levels. “We also place on record our special gratitude to the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, and the Deputy Chief Minister, D. K. Shivakumar, for their encouragement, support and for taking the matter earlier to the State Cabinet and facilitating the in-principle approval for the conduct of matches at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium,” it said.
The association emphasised that the work carried out over recent months was the result of sustained coordination. “The entire KSCA team, under the leadership of legendary cricketer Venkatesh Prasad, has worked closely with the Home Minister, the Chief Minister, the Deputy Chief Minister, Expert Committee, Expert Sub-committee, other Ministers, senior State Government officials and all statutory authorities to ensure full compliance with the recommendations of the Expert Committee. This coordinated effort has played a significant role in bringing cricket back to the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, as committed to KSCA members and cricket fans,” it noted.
Bengaluru set for high-profile IPL schedule
The approval ensures that Bengaluru will host key fixtures early in the season, including marquee clashes and potentially the final, in line with scheduling traditions.
“We are extremely happy to inform you that the government has permitted us to play the IPL matches at Chinnaswamy Stadium. All the five matches that RCB had proposed will be played here, and the playoffs and finals are also likely to be held at the stadium,” Mruthyunjaya said.
KSCA reiterated its commitment to delivering a safe and professionally managed tournament experience. “KSCA looks forward to extending full cooperation and support to RCB in hosting the upcoming IPL matches in a safe, well-coordinated and professionally managed manner, ensuring a memorable experience for cricket lovers and the sporting community,” the release concluded.
With operational plans, infrastructure upgrades and safety systems now in place, the Chinnaswamy Stadium is set to return as one of the central venues of IPL 2026.
