Kaif suggests Dhoni may back major trade for long-term team balance
Speculation over a possible high-profile trade between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals has intensified, with discussions centered on Ravindra Jadeja moving to Rajasthan in exchange for Sanju Samson. Former India batter Mohammad Kaif believes MS Dhoni could support such a move if it strengthens Chennai’s prospects in the upcoming season.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif pointed to Dhoni’s approach and priorities. He said, “For Dhoni, making the team win is the biggest goal. If he is coming to play again, he will be thinking CSK finished 10th in the standings last year. He is a man of pride; hence, his biggest goal will be to make the team win another trophy. A team cannot win the trophy based on one player.”
Kaif suggested that Jadeja’s exit is not impossible if the team believes it improves their balance. “If Jadeja has to be sacrificed for the team’s good, Dhoni will do it. People say how Dhoni operates based on friendships and does it, giving them a couple of extra chances. But it doesn’t mean his focus goes away from winning. The goal is to make CSK a champion. That’s why he will let go of Jadeja if it has to be done. If Dhoni feels he can get a better option for the team, he will take the decision.”
Kaif also speculated that discussions may already have taken place between Dhoni and Samson regarding a possible move. “If Samson is likely to join CSK, there would be a lot of calls. Sanju must have called on the phone. Behind the scenes, there are a lot of phone calls. Sanju might have spoken to CSK, maybe Dhoni, ‘Bhai kya lagta hai.’ See, Dhoni runs the team, and if CSK wants Sanju this time, then he is also the future captain. It also means that this is Dhoni’s last year. Why would they want Sanju? Jadeja has been playing for them for a long time (since 2012).”
Kaif further noted that Samson may fit well into Chennai’s batting conditions. “The style of batting Sanju Samson has, he is more likely to succeed with the bat in Chennai than Rishabh Pant or KL Rahul. He might come at No. 3 or 4, and he can hit sixes in the middle overs.”
Social media moves fuel speculation around Jadeja and Pathirana
Trade discussions gained further attention after Ravindra Jadeja deactivated his Instagram account, followed shortly by CSK fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana. The timing of both moves triggered speculation among fans that the trade talks had advanced.
As part of ongoing negotiations, The Indian Express reported that Rajasthan had long been interested in securing an Indian spinner in exchange for Samson and therefore pushed for Jadeja. According to the same report, after Chennai responded positively as discussions resumed recently, Rajasthan also sought the inclusion of Pathirana. However, CSK did not agree to that additional request and instead proposed England all-rounder Sam Curran as an alternative option.
Pathirana had become a crucial figure in CSK’s bowling attack since joining in 2022, and his potential inclusion added another layer of complexity to the trade scenario.
Raina urges CSK to retain Jadeja and maintain team identity
While Kaif’s comments leaned toward a strategic rebuild, Suresh Raina, one of CSK’s most influential former players, took a different position. Speaking on JioStar, Raina emphasized the value Jadeja brings to the franchise and expressed his belief that the all-rounder should remain central to the squad.
“Noor Ahmad should be retained. He’s a mystery spinner, so he must be kept. MS Dhoni should definitely be retained; he’s still playing, so he should stay. Ruturaj Gaikwad should continue as captain. Ravindra Jadeja should be retained again; he’s a gun player for CSK and has done really well for the team over the years. ‘Sir Ravindra Jadeja’ has to be there,” Raina said.
Raina also suggested changes in other areas as CSK reshapes for 2026. “Devon Conway should be released. CSK need a local opener, which they can target in the mini-auction.”
He added that the squad may need refreshing in certain roles. “Vijay Shankar has already had plenty of opportunities, and Deepak Hooda should also be released. There are a lot of players available in the mini-auction who can bring balance to the squad. These players got their chances last year, so now CSK will have to look for someone new.”
A franchise at a crossroads
The unfolding situation places CSK at a defining moment, balancing loyalty, legacy, leadership succession, and squad renewal. The eventual decision around Jadeja and Samson is likely to signal not only roster strategy but also the timeline and direction of Chennai’s planning for a future beyond Dhoni.
