In a major shake-up to cricket broadcasting in India, JioHotstar has acquired exclusive digital streaming rights for the upcoming five-Test India-England series through a landmark sub-licensing agreement with Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI). The development, first confirmed by Cricbuzz, positions JioHotstar as the digital home for one of the year’s most anticipated bilateral cricket series.

The red-ball clash begins June 20 at Headingley in Leeds, followed by matches at Birmingham (July 2), Lord’s (July 10), Manchester (July 23), and The Oval (July 31). Sony retains exclusive linear (TV) rights, while JioHotstar will now digitally stream the entire series in India.

A strategic alliance aimed at fan-first, cross-platform access

After weeks of closed-door negotiations, the deal was finalized within the last 24 hours, according to Cricbuzz. With this collaboration, JioHotstar and Sony have effectively created a hybrid broadcast model that maximizes both digital and television reach.

“This collaboration is a win-win for all stakeholders involved – especially Indian Cricket fans – and serves the broader sporting landscape,” said Sanjog Gupta, CEO – Sports and Live experiences, JioStar. “The combination of JioHostar’s deep digital footprint with SPNI’s broadcast network will universalise access to India’s tours of England. As the habitual destination for Cricket viewing, JioHotstar is committed to offering millions of fans – inclusive, intuitive, interactive and immersive viewing experiences. We will continue to leverage the power of our story-telling, consumer-focussed product features and connectivity to unlock infinite possibilities of serving fans on our platforms.”

Deal includes India’s 2026 white-ball tour of England

The collaboration between Sony and JioStar isn’t limited to just this Test series. The two companies have also agreed on digital streaming rights for India’s 2026 white-ball tour of England, which features three ODIs and five T20Is. All eight matches will be streamed on JioHotstar, further expanding its footprint in live cricket content.

Sony had secured long-term broadcast rights to England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) content in India last year under an eight-year agreement running through 2031. Industry sources say the ECB played a vital role in facilitating this sub-licensing deal between Sony and JioStar, ensuring that fans in India can access England-hosted matches across platforms.

“We are thrilled to bring this fantastic partnership to cricket fans for India’s tour to England!” said Gaurav Banerjee, MD and CEO, Sony Pictures Networks India. “Backed by the power of the Sony TV network and the digital prowess of JioStar – this first of its kind partnership will hope to redefine cricket coverage. Our deep thanks to our partners in ECB for their support.”

A new era for cricket viewership in India

With digital consumption outpacing traditional TV among India’s younger audiences, this move signals a broader industry shift. Sony and JioStar’s partnership could pave the way for future rights collaborations that cater to changing viewer habits while enhancing accessibility.

By blending the reach of Sony’s broadcast network with JioHotstar’s digital dominance, this model could redefine how premium cricket content is delivered in India—just in time for a marquee tour.
