The qualification picture for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2028 has become significantly clearer after nine teams secured their places in the tournament following the conclusion of the group stage at the ongoing 2026 edition. Eight sides earned automatic qualification by finishing in the top four of their respective groups, while hosts Pakistan also confirmed their participation in the 12-team event despite missing out on a top-four finish.

Top four teams seal automatic qualification

Australia, India, South Africa and Bangladesh secured the four automatic qualification places from Group A, while England, West Indies, New Zealand and Sri Lanka progressed from Group B.

Sri Lanka claimed the final automatic berth after holding off Scotland in a dramatic last-over victory, ending Scotland’s hopes of booking a direct place at the 2028 tournament.

Pakistan also qualified automatically as tournament hosts despite finishing fifth in Group B with one win from five matches.

Three qualification spots remain available

With nine teams now confirmed, attention turns to the remaining three places that will complete the Women’s T20 World Cup 2028 lineup.

The 10th qualification spot will be awarded to the highest-ranked team in the ICC Women’s T20I Team Rankings at the July 6, 2026 cut-off. Ireland currently occupy that position, sitting ninth in the rankings with 201 rating points.

The final two places will be decided through a 10-team global qualifying tournament, with teams advancing via regional qualification pathways.

Champions Trophy qualification pathway also confirmed

The qualification framework has also outlined the pathway for the inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy, which will be held in Sri Lanka next year.

Sri Lanka qualify automatically as hosts, while the remaining five teams will be determined by the ICC Women’s T20I Team Rankings at the same July 6 cut-off date.

Based on the current standings, Australia, England, India, New Zealand and South Africa are on course to complete the six-team field.

Focus shifts to final qualification race

While nine teams have already secured their places at the Women’s T20 World Cup 2028, the final rankings deadline and the global qualifying tournament will determine the remaining three teams that complete the competition lineup in Pakistan.
