Every $1 raised by the Thunder Nation enables OzHarvest to deliver two meals to those in need

Sydney Thunder’s fierce appetite for scoring runs and taking wickets during this summer’s Big Bash League seasons will only be surpassed by the club’s collective hunger to help OzHarvest feed the people in Thunder Nation who need a helping hand.

Thunder has been a proud supporter of OzHarvest for the past two seasons. Besides helping them to provide more than 100,000 nutritious meals, the club’s players and staff also actively educate its community about food wastage and sustainability.

As Australia’s leading food ‘rescue’ organisation, OzHarvest rescues 250 tonnes of quality excess food from 3,500 commercial outlets every year. This food, which is distributed to over 1,500 charities, would otherwise go to waste if not for the work OzHarvest do.

The COVID-19 pandemic has seen demand for food relief hit an all-time high. Since March 2020:

– OzHarvest has experienced a 47% increase in demand for its services

– OzHarvest Market has a new customer base, including international students, temporary visa holders, casual and hospitality workers

– Over a quarter of people experiencing food insecurity had never faced it before the pandemic

Sydney Thunder all-rounder Rachel Trenaman said she was happy to see the club supporting OzHarvest, who help countless individuals and families experiencing food insecurity due to either the COVID-19 pandemic, drought, last summer’s destructive bushfires or personal circumstance.

“The club’s alliance with OzHarvest has helped them provide more than 100,000 meals to people in need across Australia, and make such a difference to our community,” said Trenaman.

“2020 has been such a challenging year for all, and now there are more people than ever relying on food relief.”

Her club-mate, Jason Sangha from Thunder’s men’s team, said the support from the Thunder Nation over the last two seasons has been absolutely amazing. “Our aim at Sydney Thunder is to make a real and meaningful difference in our communities.”

OzHarvest’s Community Fundraising Manager, Lisa Dainty shared just how valuable the support of Thunder Nation was to their important work. “We are so thrilled to be partnering with Sydney Thunder for the third year. Every one dollar raised throughout the Thunder Nation allows OzHarvest to deliver two meals to those in need around Australia”

Sydney Thunder’s Acting General Manager Chris Botherway said it was imperative for the club to throw its support behind worthy causes, such as OzHarvest.

“We’re a proud supporter of the tireless work OzHarvest is doing for the community,” said Botherway.

“Through our partnership we’ve been able to educate our playing squads, staff, Members and supporters about avoiding unnecessary food wastage.

“Thanks to the generosity of the Thunder Nation, we’ve also been able to raise the money needed to provide healthy, nutritious meals for people throughout our community.”
