The Hobart Hurricanes are pleased to announce the re-signing of 23-year-old pace bowler, Iain Carlisle, on a one-year deal ahead of BBL|13.
In another deal that was struck during League’s retention week, it will be Carlisle’s second season as a fully-contracted Hurricanes player.
Although still yet to make his debut in purple, Carlisle came on in leaps and bounds throughout season 2022-23. After being elevated from a rookie to a full Tasmanian Tigers contract at the start of the season, Carlisle went on to not only pick up his first full-fledged BBL contract, but also make his first class and List A debuts at the back end of the domestic season.
Carlisle was presented with cap number 232 ahead of the Tigers final game of the Marsh One-Day Cup season against eventual winners, Western Australia, in February, and then also went on to make his first class debut in the Tigers final Marsh Sheffield Shield match of the season against Queensland just two weeks later.
Prior to the commencement of play in that match, Carlisle was presented with Tigers cap number 208 by Tim Paine, in a poignant cap presentation ahead of what ended up being Paine’s final match for Tasmania.
Carlisle went on to take a wicket in his first class debut, clean bowling set batter, Max Bryant, in the first innings, with a delivery that sent his opponent’s stumps skittling.
He topped off a great end to the 2022-23 season by being named the Jamie Cox Young Player of the Year at Cricket Tasmania’s Awards Night.
Hurricanes and Tigers head coach, Jeff Vaughan, said that Carlisle’s progress had been one of the really encouraging stories to come out of the 2022-23 season for his squad.
“Iain was a really good story for us last season,” Vaughan said. “For a lot of our young pace bowlers in particular, it has been a big test of patience when they have been sitting behind guys like [Jackson] Bird and [Peter] Siddle in terms of selection, and then we also have guys like [Nathan] Ellis, [Riley] Meredith and [Billy] Stanlake in the Hurricanes set up as well.”
“But Iain put in the work and stayed fit, and off the back of some strong performances in both the [Wilson Homes Cricket Tasmania Premier League] CTPL and Second XI cricket, he was justly rewarded with those debuts for the Tigers at the back end of the season.”
“Iain is a really talented, long-term prospect for us,” Vaughan continued. “He’s a genuine front line quick, who has good pace as well as the ability to swing the ball. He is also a really gifted all-round athlete, so whilst there’s going to be a lot of competition for spots among all of our bowlers across both the Hurricanes and Tigers programs this year, I would say there is little doubt we’ll be seeing him out there on the field representing at least one of our programs again this season.”
Carlisle added that he was really excited by the prospect of being offered a Hurricanes contract for the second year in a row.
“I’m thrilled to secure a Hurricanes contract again this season,” Carlisle said. “It’s really encouraging in terms of building on the work I did last season.”
“Obviously, the next challenge for me will be breaking through into that Hurricanes starting XI, and that will be really tough when you look at the names we have on our list,” Carlisle continued.
“But the feedback I got from the coaching staff and from my Tigers’ selections toward the end of last season was really positive – I know what I need to keep working on so that I am ready to go whenever the team needs me.”
Carlisle joins Tim David, Paddy Dooley, Nathan Ellis, Peter Hatzoglou, Caleb Jewell, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Mitch Owen, Billy Stanlake, Matthew Wade and Mac Wright as Hurricanes currently contracted for BBL|13.
