South Australia’s 2023-24 domestic summer of cricket has been locked in today, with Cricket Australia releasing the full season fixture for the SA Scorpions and West End Redbacks.
WNCL cricket will make its Adelaide Oval return in January in the form of a huge day/night clash between South Australia and Victoria on 29 January, a milestone match-up for the Scorpions as they take to the surface for the first time since it’s redevelopment.
The WNCL retains its 12-game structure made up of six double-headers followed by a Grand Final between the two highest finishers, a game the Scorpions have made in the last two seasons.
Looking to take that final step this season, the Scorpions have confirmed their playing list ahead of the 2023-24 season, headlined by the signings of leg-spinner Anesu Mushangwe, all-rounder Eleanor Larosa and pace bowler Courtney Neale.
For the West End Redbacks, continued improvement on a strong showing last summer, which featured back-to-back Sheffield Shield wins and a Marsh One-Day Cup Grand Final appearance, will be front of mind for the full playing list, announced in May.
Alongside a long list of re-signings for key players, South Australia also welcome back Kelvin Smith to the squad following consistent performances in Premier Cricket, as well as exciting 21-year-old Jake Fraser McGurk who makes the switch from Victoria.
SACA General Manager – Cricket Tim Nielsen welcomed the fixture and spoke of the squads’ anticipation for the season ahead.
“It is great to have all of the matches locked in, it is always exciting to begin planning for opponents and getting an idea of what the summer will look like,” Nielsen said.
“The Scorpions have been up the top of the standings for consecutive seasons now and we are confident in taking that next step with the squad we have assembled. It will be great to see what the group can achieve this summer.
“Last season for the Redbacks featured several strong performances and clear, consistent signs of the talent the squad has, so we are really looking forward to getting back out there to take it to the next level this year.”
It all starts for the Scorpions on Friday 22 September when the ACT Meteors travel to Karen Rolton Oval for the season opener, followed by a second clash two days later at the same venue.
Tasmania will host the WNCL Grand Final rematch on Tuesday 12 December at Blundstone Arena, a match-up the Scorpions will be eyeing off with the release of the schedule today. Allan Border Field and Sydney Olympic Stadium will also host the Scorpions this summer in addition to home grounds Karen Rolton Oval and Adelaide Oval.
The Redbacks begin their summer against Tasmania at Karen Rolton Oval with a Marsh Sheffield Shield game followed by a One Day Cup clash. Adelaide Oval will also see plenty of the Redbacks, with four games scheduled for the iconic venue.
Western Australia will host the Redbacks on 20 November in the Marsh One-Day Cup Grand Final rematch.
